Wax paper and parchment
Wax: blue · parchment: green
Wax paper and parchment go in different carts: wipe wax paper clean and put it in the blue cart, and put parchment paper, used or not, in the green cart.
How to prepare it
- Check the original box or roll to confirm which paper you have before you sort it.
- Wipe food residue off wax paper with a napkin, then recycle the paper and compost the napkin.
- Compost parchment even when it's greasy or covered in baking residue; the City doesn't accept it for recycling.
- Butcher's paper and patty paper follow the wax paper rule, while muffin liners and air fryer sheets follow the parchment rule.
Good to know
The coating is what separates them. Wax and similar coatings stop paper from composting properly, so the City keeps wax paper out of the green cart. Parchment is treated for cooking and is usually food-soiled, which makes it unsuitable for recycling, so it goes to compost instead. Community recycling depots also accept clean wax paper.
