Why the black cart?
Both are paper deliberately treated to resist moisture — wax coating on one, silicone on the other — which also makes them resist pulping and composting. Treated papers default to the black cart.
Get it right
- Butcher paper and freezer paper (plastic-coated) follow the same rule.
- Plain paper baking cups without silicone coating can go green if food-soiled — but shiny non-stick ones are black cart.
- A silicone baking mat replaces parchment hundreds of times over.
