Why the black cart?
Butts are plastic, not paper — the filter is cellulose acetate, which never composts — and a smouldering butt is a genuine cart and truck fire risk. Cold and contained, they’re black cart waste.
Get it right
- Douse or let ashtrays cool completely — a day is safest — before emptying into the cart.
- Fireplace and fire-pit ashes follow the same rule: cold only, ideally bagged, black cart.
- Never flick butts onto the street; storm drains run straight to the river.
