Cigarette butts: black cart
Black cart — Garbage
Put fully extinguished cigarette butts in the black cart. Double-bag cigarette ashes and tie the bag closed before they go in.
How to prepare it
- Make sure every butt is completely out before it goes in the cart.
- Double-bag ashes and tie them shut to keep the dust contained.
- Keep butts out of the green cart, because they are not compostable.
- Never flush butts or ashes down a toilet, sink or drain.
- Recycle the empty pack in the blue cart after removing the cellophane and foil liner, which are recycled separately.
Good to know
Cigarette ashes are handled differently from fireplace, fire pit or barbecue ashes. Those go in the green cart once they are cold and soaked with water, inside a certified compostable or paper bag that is tied or rolled shut. Cigarette butts and their ashes always go in the black cart.
