Bulk & large item disposal in Calgary
Surprise for many new Calgarians: the City doesn't do curbside bulk pickup. Nothing large gets collected from beside your carts. Here's what actually works, cheapest first.
1. Donate it (free — often with free pickup)
If the item is clean and usable, charities and thrift stores will often collect furniture and working appliances from your home at no charge. This is the only truly free option for most large items — and the fastest.
2. Retailer take-back (usually cheap or free)
Buying a replacement mattress or appliance? Most retailers will haul the old one away on delivery — sometimes free, sometimes for a small fee. Ask before you order; it beats renting a truck.
3. Take it to a City landfill (weight-based fee)
All three landfills accept residential large items — furniture, mattresses, appliances (refrigerant is removed on site), tires, scrap metal and renovation debris. 4. Private junk removal (convenient, priciest)
Junk-removal companies will do the lifting and hauling for you, priced by volume. Useful for estate clean-outs or when you have no truck access — get a couple of quotes, prices vary a lot.
What not to do
- Don't leave items at the curb or beside your carts — they won't be collected, and dumping fines apply.
- Don't put large items in the black cart — the lid must close, and crews skip overfilled carts.
- Don't landfill what's still usable — donation saves you the fee and the trip.
