Appliances and fridges
📍
In Calgary, put this in the
Drop-off / depot
Take large appliances to a City landfill. Fridges/freezers need refrigerant removal — a handling fee applies.
Also searched as: fridge, refrigerator, washer, dryer, stove.
Why it can’t go in a cart
Large appliances are prime scrap steel and are recycled, not buried. Fridges and freezers carry an extra step: refrigerant must be professionally extracted first because released coolant is a potent greenhouse gas — hence the handling fee.
Get it right
- All three City landfills take appliances; fridges, freezers and AC units pay the refrigerant-removal fee.
- Working appliances have real resale or donation value — appliance recyclers and charities may pick up free.
- Remove or secure doors on fridges and freezers for transport and safety (it’s the law in many places, and just sensible).
- Buying new? Delivery teams will usually haul the old unit away — often the easiest route.
