Drop-off / depot
Take fridges, freezers, stoves, washers and dryers to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply, or to a private metal recycler.
How to prepare it
- Remove all food and other contents first; the City asks for cooling appliances to arrive empty.
- Budget for the 2026 refrigerant surcharge of $17 per fridge, freezer, air conditioner or water cooler, added to the regular load charge.
- Stoves, washers, dryers and dishwashers have no refrigerant, so they skip the surcharge; bring them clean for metal recycling.
- Call a City-listed metal recycler such as Recon Metal, Calgary Metal, Federal Metals or Westcan Recyclers first; each may pay, charge or take appliances free.
Good to know
The refrigerant surcharge applies even when the refrigerant has already been removed. On top of it, a load under 250 kg pays a $25 flat rate, and heavier loads are charged by weight. Fridges, freezers and water coolers are on the City's list of items that can't go in or beside the black cart, so the Eco Centre or a recycler are your options.
