Why it can’t go in a cart
Construction debris is banned from carts by both weight and material: drywall in landfills generates hydrogen sulphide gas as the gypsum breaks down, so it’s separated for gypsum recycling at the landfill instead.
Get it right
- Keep drywall separate from other debris at the landfill — it goes in its own recycling stream.
- Clean, reusable lumber and fixtures are welcome at building-material reuse stores.
- Small offcuts of clean untreated wood can go in the black cart, but a reno’s worth needs the landfill.
