Scrap wood (small)
Untreated: green · treated: black
Put small pieces of clean, untreated wood in your green cart, with no nails, screws or paint. Painted, treated and manufactured wood goes in the black cart.
How to prepare it
- Cut pieces to under 15 cm (6 in.) in diameter and 1.25 m (4 ft) long so the green cart lid closes.
- Pull out every nail, screw and bit of hardware first; wood with hardware attached counts as treated and goes in the black cart.
- Bag sawdust and shavings in a certified compostable or paper bag, tie or roll it shut, then add it to the green cart.
- Put small pieces of plywood, particle board, MDF or OSB in the black cart instead, double-bagging their sawdust for dust control.
Good to know
Manufactured wood such as plywood contains chemicals that won't break down during composting and would spoil the finished compost. Wood furniture is also excluded from the green cart. Large amounts or oversized pieces of any wood go to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply; clean, untreated wood kept separate is charged a lower recycling rate.
