Small pieces of clean, untreated wood can go in the black cart. Painted/treated wood and large amounts go to a landfill.

Why the black cart?
A few small offcuts are fine as garbage, but wood never goes in the green cart — lumber isn’t yard waste, and paint, stain and pressure-treatment chemicals must stay out of compost entirely.
Get it right
- Black cart limit is common sense: a handful of offcuts, pieces short enough that the lid closes.
- Pressure-treated wood (greenish tint or stamped) always goes to the landfill, regardless of size.
- Untreated natural branches are different — those are green cart yard waste.
