Calgary has three City landfills, each with an Eco Centre for household drop-offs. See which are open right now, then check fees and free drop-offs before you load up.

Is the Calgary dump open on Sunday?

Until October 31, 2026, East Calgary is the only City landfill open on Sundays, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spyhill and Shepard are closed every Sunday. From November, East Calgary also closes on Sundays for the winter season, so no City landfill will be open on Sundays.

Landfill hours on holidays

City landfills stay open on most statutory holidays, including Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day. Every site closes on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Days not on the City’s holiday list follow regular hours.

Spyhill, Shepard or East Calgary?

• Spyhill (11808 69 Street NW) is the only City landfill in northwest Calgary. Same hours all year.
• Shepard (12111 68 Street SE) is in the far southeast and has the City’s only industrial waste area.
• East Calgary (3020 68 Street SE) opens earliest, at 6 a.m. on weekdays from April to October.

All three take residential garbage and have Eco Centres for free items such as electronics and household hazardous waste. If you only have cardboard or household recycling, a community recycling depot is usually closer. For a sofa, mattress or fridge, compare large-item options first.

How much does it cost to go to the dump?

Most household loads at a City landfill pay a flat minimum charge. Heavier loads are weighed and charged by material. These are the City’s 2026 residential rates:

Mixing free items into a chargeable load makes the whole load chargeable, so keep them separate. Staff confirm the load type and charge on site.

What can you drop off for free?

• Electronics such as TVs, computers and small appliances.
• Household hazardous waste, including paint, batteries and chemicals. Keep chemicals sealed and labelled, and never mix products.
• Clothing, shoes and textiles.
• Eligible passenger tires and foam packaging.
• Seasonal programs: spring and fall yard waste, compost giveaways and Christmas tree drop-off, on the dates the City announces.

Before you go

• Tarp and secure your load. The City requires loads to be covered and tied down so nothing blows out on the way.
• Sort before you arrive. Put free items, yard waste and garbage in separate parts of the vehicle so each can be dropped at the right spot.
• Expect an inspection. Loads with prohibited or hazardous materials can be surcharged or refused.
• Check the item first. Search what goes where; many items go in your carts or to a community recycling depot instead.
