Electronics and e-waste

📍
In Calgary, put this in the
Drop-off / depot

Take electronics to a City Throw ‘n’ Go area or an Alberta Recycling electronics depot — they are banned from carts.

Why it can’t go in a cart

Electronics are banned from Calgary carts because they combine hazardous materials (lead, mercury, batteries) with valuable ones (copper, gold, rare metals). Alberta’s provincial e-waste program — funded by fees paid at purchase — dismantles them and recovers the metals free of charge.

Get it right

  • Drop-off is free at all three City landfills and registered electronics recyclers — you already paid the recycling fee when you bought the device.
  • Wipe personal data first: factory-reset phones and tablets, and wipe or remove computer drives.
  • TVs, monitors, computers, printers, game consoles, cables and small gadgets are all in the program.
  • Working electronics may be worth donating or selling — reuse beats recycling.
