Small appliances: drop-off
Drop-off / depot
Take broken toasters, kettles, microwaves, blenders and other corded or battery-powered appliances to an electronics drop-off or City Eco Centre, free.
How to prepare it
- Clean out crumbs and food residue first, and drain all the oil from a deep fryer.
- Empty a vacuum's dust into a tied bag for the black cart before recycling the vacuum itself.
- Donate working appliances to charities such as Calgary Drop-In Centre, Goodwill Alberta or Women in Need Society after calling to confirm they accept them.
- Bring appliances on an electronics-only trip; adding other garbage makes the Eco Centre load chargeable.
Good to know
Small appliances count as electronics, so they don't belong in the blue, black or green cart and can damage recycling equipment. A stovetop kettle or other item with no cord or battery is different: donate it if it's usable, or put it in the black cart, with any glass wrapped safely, when it's broken.
