Cords and cables
Cords: black cart · chargers: e-waste
Put a few broken extension cords, power bars, network or phone cables in your black cart. Charging, computer and HDMI cables go free to electronics recycling.
How to prepare it
- Drop charging cords, USB cables and dongles at a City Eco Centre with other electronics; an electronics-only load is free.
- For a large pile of cords, use the Eco Centre's scrap metal area, where charges apply, or call a private metal recycler.
- City-listed recyclers such as Recon Metal, Calgary Metal and Federal Metals may buy, charge for or take scrap cords free.
- Never put cords or chargers in the blue cart; they tangle in the sorting equipment and put workers at risk.
Good to know
Christmas lights, garden hoses and rope are treated like extension cords: a few go in the black cart, never the blue cart. Cables that came with a device, such as a phone charger or computer cable, are part of the City's electronics program, so you can recycle them along with the device itself.
