Cleaning chemicals

In Calgary, put this in the
Special handling
Take household chemicals to a household hazardous waste drop-off at any City landfill.
Also searched as: bleach, cleaners, solvents, pesticides.
Why it can’t go in a cart
Corrosive, flammable and toxic products can injure collection staff, react inside the truck, and leach from the landfill into groundwater. The hazardous-waste stream neutralizes or safely destroys them instead.
Get it right
- Keep products in their original, labelled containers — mystery bottles are the depots’ biggest headache.
- Never mix chemicals (bleach plus ammonia produces toxic gas even in a garbage bag).
- Eco Centres at all three landfills and eight fire-station depots take household chemicals free.
- Fully empty, rinsed cleaner bottles (non-pesticide) can go in the blue cart.
