Cleaning chemicals: special drop-off
Special handling
Take unwanted cleaners, garden chemicals and solvents, plus empty containers with a hazard symbol, to a fire-station HHW depot or Eco Centre for free.
How to prepare it
- Keep products in their original labelled containers; otherwise use a clean, leak-proof container with a tight lid (never a pop bottle or milk jug) and label it.
- Never combine leftovers, and store incompatible products such as bleach and ammonia apart.
- Bring up to 20 litres per visit, in containers no larger than 20 litres.
- Carry containers upright in a sturdy box in the trunk, away from passengers and pets, and wear gloves.
- Do not pour any chemical down a sink, toilet or drain.
Good to know
A hazard symbol (corrosive, flammable, poisonous or explosive) means the container stays out of all three carts, even when it looks empty, because residue remains. Spray cleaners, lubricants such as WD-40, pool and hot tub chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers are all accepted. The program is free and for residents only; adding other garbage at an Eco Centre brings charges.
