Light bulbs (incandescent and LED): black cart

Black cart — Garbage

Burnt-out incandescent, halogen and LED bulbs go in the black cart. Fluorescent tubes and CFL bulbs are different and need a hazardous waste drop-off.

How to prepare it

  1. Pass working incandescent or halogen bulbs on to family, friends or a charity instead of throwing them out.
  2. Collect the pieces of a broken bulb in a puncture-resistant container with a lid, or wrap them in two layers of paper inside a tied bag.
  3. Label packaged broken glass 'sharps' with a permanent marker before it goes in the black cart.
  4. Bulbs are products, not packaging, so they never belong in the blue cart, though the cardboard box they came in does.

Good to know

Only fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs need hazardous waste handling; take those free to a fire-station HHW depot or Eco Centre, and keep them out of all carts. Incandescent, halogen and LED bulbs are ordinary household garbage, so there is no need for a special trip.
