Light bulbs (incandescent and LED)

In Calgary, put this in the
Black cart — Garbage

Incandescent and LED bulbs go in the black cart (wrap to contain breakage). CFL and fluorescent bulbs are hazardous and go to a drop-off.

Also searched as: light bulb, lightbulb, led bulb.

Why the black cart?

Incandescents and LEDs contain no mercury, and their mixed glass-metal-electronics construction isn’t worth separating at municipal scale — so they’re safe, if unglamorous, black cart items. The mercury-bearing CFL is the one that must never go in the cart.

Get it right

  • Wrap bulbs in a bit of paper so broken glass doesn’t end up loose in the cart.
  • Don’t put any bulb in the blue cart — bulb glass is not container glass.
  • Not sure which type you have? Spiral tube = CFL (drop-off); classic pear shape or labelled LED = black cart.
