Fluorescent tubes and CFL bulbs: special drop-off
Special handling
Take fluorescent tubes and CFL bulbs to a fire-station HHW depot or City Eco Centre, free of charge. Keep them out of the blue, green and black carts.
How to prepare it
- Wrap each CFL in paper, then put the bulbs in a bag and tie it closed.
- Fire-station depots accept up to 3 tubes per visit, each no longer than 4 feet.
- For bigger batches, use an Eco Centre, which takes up to 8 tubes per visit.
- Tubes longer than 4 feet should go to an Eco Centre rather than a fire station.
- Pack tubes in a box or bin in the vehicle so they cannot roll or break.
Good to know
Fluorescent tubes and CFLs are household hazardous waste, unlike incandescent, halogen and LED bulbs, which go in the black cart. Drop-off is free as long as you do not bring other garbage to the Eco Centre. Businesses cannot use the household program; commercial fluorescent tubes are accepted only at Shepard landfill with a permit.
