Why it can’t go in a cart
Flushed or landfilled drugs end up in waterways — wastewater treatment can’t remove most pharmaceuticals. Alberta pharmacies take back unused medication at no charge and route it to proper destruction.
Get it right
- All of it qualifies: prescriptions, over-the-counter pills, liquids, creams, inhalers and pet meds.
- Leave pills in their original containers or bag them; you can black out personal info on labels.
- Clean, empty prescription vials go in the black cart (they’re too small for recycling sorting).
