Fire extinguishers: special drop-off
Special handling
Take household fire extinguishers under 30 lb to a fire-station HHW depot or a City Eco Centre, free of charge. Never put one in any cart.
How to prepare it
- Do not puncture or crush the cylinder.
- Secure it upright in the trunk or cargo area so it cannot tip or roll on the way.
- Fire-station depots are open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and need no appointment.
- Keep regular garbage out of the same trip to an Eco Centre, or charges will apply.
Good to know
A pressurized cylinder in a blue, black or green cart is a serious hazard for collection drivers and facility staff, so extinguishers only go through the City's hazardous waste drop-offs. The City's HHW list covers extinguishers under 30 lb; for a larger unit, call 311 before you go. The program is for households, and commercial waste is not accepted.
