Why it can’t go in a cart
Extinguishers are pressurized vessels — crushed in a truck they can rupture violently. Depots depressurize them, recover the cylinder steel, and dispose of the chemical agent properly.
Get it right
- All three City landfills accept extinguishers at the hazardous-waste drop-off, free for residents.
- Fire-safety companies can refill and recertify larger extinguishers instead — often cheaper than replacing.
- Transport upright, pin in place.
