Motor oil and filters: special drop-off
Special handling
Take used motor oil, oil filters and empty oil containers to a fire-station HHW depot or City Eco Centre for free. Keep them out of carts and drains.
How to prepare it
- Pour used oil into its original jug or a clean, leak-proof container with a tight lid, and label it.
- Keep oil separate from antifreeze, brake fluid and other fluids; never mix them in one container.
- Bring up to 20 litres per visit, with no single container larger than 20 litres.
- To keep your container, empty it into the designated tanks at an Eco Centre; fire-station depots cannot offer this.
- Carry containers upright in a box in the trunk, and wear gloves when handling them.
Good to know
Motor oil, filters and oil containers, including empty jugs, are banned from the blue, green and black carts. The same drop-offs also take used fuel, antifreeze (ethylene glycol only), brake, transmission and power steering fluid, and lead-acid car batteries. Businesses should use the Alberta Recycling Management Authority's used oil program instead.
