Take used oil and filters to an EcoCentre or eligible retailer — never pour down drains or into carts.

Why it can’t go in a cart
One litre of oil can contaminate a million litres of water, and used oil is genuinely valuable — Alberta’s program re-refines it into new lubricants and fuel. Filters and empty oil jugs are recycled through the same free system.
Get it right
- Return oil in a sealed jug — the original container or any clean screw-top jug works.
- Bag drained filters so they don’t drip in the car.
- Many auto parts retailers and quick-lube shops accept used oil free; so do all three Eco Centres.
- Never mix oil with other fluids like antifreeze or gas — mixed fluids can’t be re-refined.
