Household batteries: special drop-off
Special handling
Never put batteries in any cart. Take them to a participating retailer, a fire-station HHW depot or a City Eco Centre; all three are free.
How to prepare it
- Cover both ends of each battery with clear, electrical or duct tape so the label stays readable, or seal each one in its own clear bag.
- Retail drop-offs include Calgary Co-op, London Drugs, Save-On-Foods, Staples, Rona and The Home Depot; find more at recycleyourbatteries.ca.
- Retailers and fire-station depots take loose batteries only, so bring devices with built-in batteries to an Eco Centre.
- Hand swollen, leaking or corroded batteries directly to Eco Centre staff and mention the damage.
Good to know
Used batteries still hold energy and can spark if they touch metal or each other, or get crushed in a truck; the City reported more than 50 battery-related fire incidents at its landfills and recycling facilities in 2024. Until drop-off, store them away from new batteries, in a jar somewhere cool and dry, out of reach of young children.
