Special handling
Never put batteries in any cart — they cause fires. Drop them off free at any City fire hall, landfill, or many retailers.

Why it can’t go in a cart
Batteries crushed in collection trucks and sorting equipment spark fires — they’re a leading cause of recycling-facility blazes across North America. Drop-off programs recover the metals safely instead.
Get it right
- Free drop-offs: any Eco Centre, designated fire stations, and many battery retailers.
- Tape the terminals of 9-volt and lithium batteries with clear tape before storing or dropping off.
- Keep a jar for dead batteries and make one trip a year — they’re small, but never cart-safe.
