Donate or sell furniture in good condition. Small broken pieces can go inside your black cart; take large broken furniture to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply.
How to prepare it
- Call a charity such as Goodwill Alberta, Calgary Drop-In Centre, Women in Need Society or Diabetes Canada to confirm what they accept before you haul anything.
- Small broken items like lawn chairs, stools and side tables can go in the black cart if the lid closes and it stays under 60 kg.
- Don't leave furniture in the alley or beside your cart for pickup; garbage has to fit inside the cart.
- Sort metal pieces such as filing cabinets and patio furniture into their own pile, because the Eco Centre takes them as scrap metal.
Good to know
At an Eco Centre, a load under 250 kg pays a $25 flat rate in 2026, and heavier loads are charged by weight. If you add furniture to a load of free items such as electronics, the whole load is charged, unless you ask the scalehouse to weigh each material separately.
