In Calgary, put this in the
Drop-off / depot
Take mattresses to a City landfill — recycling fees apply. They are not collected at the curb.
Also searched as: mattress, box spring.
Why it can’t go in a cart
Calgary has no curbside bulk pickup, and mattresses are deliberately diverted to recycling at the landfill: the steel springs, foam and fibre are separated and about 90% of a mattress can be recovered rather than buried.
Get it right
- All three City landfills accept mattresses and box springs; a per-unit recycling fee applies.
- Buying a new mattress? Many retailers haul away the old one on delivery — ask before you rent a truck.
- Clean, usable mattresses may be accepted by some charities — call ahead, policies vary.
- Don’t leave a mattress beside your carts: it won’t be collected and can earn a bylaw complaint.
