Drop-off / depot
Take an old or unusable mattress or box spring to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply. Mattresses can't go in or beside any cart.
How to prepare it
- Offer a clean, usable mattress to friends or family, sell it online, or ask Women in Need Thrift Stores or Calgary Drop-In Centre whether they're accepting one.
- Before buying a new mattress, ask the retailer whether it runs a recycling program for your old one.
- Consider Re-Matt, a local mattress recycler the City lists as an option; fees may apply.
- Cover and secure the mattress in your vehicle so nothing blows off on the way to the Eco Centre.
Good to know
Box springs, futons and foam or latex mattress pads follow the same rules as mattresses. They're on the City's list of oversized items that are not allowed in the black cart. At the Eco Centre they are charged as garbage: a load under 250 kg pays a $25 flat rate in 2026, and heavier loads pay by weight.
