Foam packaging peanuts
Foam: blue · starch-based: black
Foam packing peanuts go in the blue cart inside a bag that is tied closed. Biodegradable or starch-based peanuts go in the black cart instead.

How to prepare it
- Gather foam peanuts into a bag and tie it shut; they are one of the few recyclables the City wants bagged rather than loose.
- Pick out cardboard, paper and deflated air pillows mixed in with the peanuts and recycle those loose in the blue cart.
- For a large amount, take bagged peanuts to a community recycling depot or City Eco Centre; foam is free there if you bring no garbage.
- Peanuts labelled biodegradable or compostable, or made from corn or starch, belong in a tied bag in the black cart.
Good to know
No packing peanuts belong in the green cart. The City says foam sold as biodegradable or compostable, including corn and starch products such as Green Cell Foam, does not break down properly at its composting facility. Since October 1, 2026, the blue cart also takes other foam packaging such as blocks, egg cartons, meat trays and takeout containers.
