Parchment paper: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put parchment paper in the green cart, clean or used. Wax paper is a different product: wipe it clean and put it in the blue cart.
How to prepare it
- Leave grease and baking residue on parchment; it goes in the green cart as is, along with any food scraps.
- Muffin and cupcake liners, paper loaf pans, cake moulds and air fryer sheets go in the green cart too.
- Put the parchment sheet from under a pizza in the green cart, even if the box itself is clean enough to recycle.
- Recycle the empty cardboard box the roll came in with your other blue cart boxes.
Good to know
Parchment is treated for cooking and usually ends up food-soiled, so the City doesn't accept it for recycling. Wax paper and butcher's paper are the reverse: their coating keeps them from composting, so they go in the blue cart once wiped clean. Check the package if you're not sure which one you have.
