Shredded paper: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Put shredded paper in a clear plastic bag, tie the handles closed, and place it in the blue cart or take it to a community recycling depot.
How to prepare it
- Choose a clear or see-through bag; black garbage bags are treated as garbage and aren't opened.
- Tie the handles securely so shreds can't spill out.
- Bag only the shredded paper; whole sheets and envelopes go in the blue cart loose.
- If you have several bags, take some to a community recycling depot, which accepts bagged shreds.
Good to know
Shredded bits are too small to be sorted on their own and end up mixed into other recyclables, so the bag keeps them together. It is one of the few exceptions to the City's rule that recyclables go in loose. If the cart is full, don't set extra bags beside it, because the City doesn't accept extra recycling in bags outside the cart.
