Why it can’t go in a cart
The blue cart is designed for packaging, not hardware — heavy or bulky metal damages sorting equipment. City landfills accept scrap metal for recycling, and private scrap dealers will often take larger loads for free or even pay for them.
Get it right
- Rule of thumb: metal packaging (cans, foil, lids) in the blue cart; metal objects (pots, pipes, tools) to a depot.
- All three City landfills — Spyhill, East Calgary and Shepard — accept scrap metal for recycling.
- Working pots, pans and tools are prime donation-store material.
