Scrap metal: drop-off
Drop-off / depot
Take scrap metal to a private metal recycler or a City Eco Centre (charges apply). Metal objects do not go in the blue cart or community recycling depots.
How to prepare it
- Phone a metal recycler before you go; depending on the company, it may pay for scrap, charge a fee or take it for free.
- Drain engines and transmissions of all fluids, empty the oil and gas from generators, and remove fuel from small engines.
- Roll up chain link and barbed wire fencing before drop-off.
- Donate usable pots, pans and cutlery; worn-out cookware can also go in the black cart, with knives packaged as sharps.
Good to know
Hangers, car parts, shelving and other metal items can damage recycling sorting equipment, so the blue cart only takes metal packaging such as food cans, foil and lids. At an Eco Centre, scrap metal is a charge item: loads under 250 kg pay a flat $25, heavier loads pay by weight, and mixing in free items means the whole load is charged.
