Empty aerosol cans

Since October 1, 2026, empty food and personal-care aerosols go in the blue cart. Spray paint, cleaners and other aerosols go to hazardous waste drop-off.

How to prepare it
- Use up the contents first: the blue cart takes empty cans of hairspray, dry shampoo, shaving foam, deodorant, sunscreen, bug repellent, cooking spray and whipped cream.
- Leave the cap on and put the can in loose, not inside a bag.
- Never puncture or crush any aerosol can.
- Take other sprays, like spray paint, cleaners, WD-40, insecticides and bear spray, to a fire-station HHW depot or Eco Centre for free.
- Extra empty food and body aerosols can also go to a community recycling depot.
Good to know
Only aerosols you eat or put on your hair, skin or body belong in the blue cart; the City sends other sprays and chemicals to its household hazardous waste program. Any other aerosol or CO2 container with a hazard symbol, such as flammable or poison, goes there even when empty or expired. Aerosol cans never go in the black cart.
