Metal food cans: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Empty, rinsed food cans and tins go loose in the blue cart, paper labels and all. Pop cans can also go back to a bottle depot for the deposit.
How to prepare it
- Scrape leftover food into your compost pail, then rinse the can and shake out the water.
- Tuck a cut-out or pull-tab lid inside the empty can and pinch the top closed so the sharp edge is contained.
- Pull off plastic lids, such as those on coffee or cookie tins, and recycle them separately.
- Cookie, tea, coffee and candle tins, pet food cans and cooking oil cans are accepted as well.
Good to know
The blue cart takes metal packaging, not metal objects. Pots, pans, cutlery, hangers and other scrap metal can damage sorting equipment, so donate usable cookware or take worn-out metal to a metal recycler or City Eco Centre, where charges apply. Aluminum foil, foil trays and pie plates are accepted; crumple foil into a ball first.
