Ceramics and dishes: black cart
Black cart — Garbage
Put broken ceramic plates, mugs and dishes in your black cart, safely wrapped. Donate or give away dishes that are still usable.
How to prepare it
- Pack broken pieces in a puncture-resistant container with a lid, such as a plastic tub, or wrap them in two layers of paper inside a tied bag.
- Label the package 'sharps' with a permanent marker before it goes in the cart.
- Call a charity such as Goodwill Alberta, Calgary Drop-In Centre or Women in Need Society to confirm they're taking housewares before you donate.
- Take oversized pieces that won't fit in the cart to a City Eco Centre; charges apply.
Good to know
Ceramics, porcelain, drinking glasses, Pyrex and mirrors can't go in the blue cart, because their glass is different from food jars and isn't recyclable. Broken glass food jars are the exception: they can go loose in the blue cart. If you have no suitable tub, a sealed cardboard box also works for broken pieces.
