In Calgary, put this in the
Black cart — Garbage
Ceramic dishes and mugs go in the black cart. Wrap broken pieces.
Also searched as: ceramic, plate, mug, pottery.
Why the black cart?
Ceramic is fired clay, not glass — it never melts in a glass furnace and shows up as stones in recycled glass, so it’s one of the glass stream’s worst contaminants. Unbroken dishes are far better donated than binned.
Get it right
- Wrap sharp broken pieces in paper before placing them in the black cart.
- Complete sets and undamaged dishes are gladly taken by thrift stores.
- Broken ceramic makes decent drainage material in the bottom of plant pots — a classic reuse.
