Drinking glasses and Pyrex: black cart
Black cart — Garbage
Broken or unusable drinking glasses and Pyrex go in the black cart, safely wrapped. They are not recyclable, so keep them out of the blue cart.
How to prepare it
- Give glassware that still works to family or friends, sell it online, or donate it after checking that the charity is taking housewares.
- Seal broken pieces in a puncture-resistant, non-breakable container such as a plastic tub or pail with a lid.
- Alternatively, wrap the shards in two layers of paper and place them in a tied bag.
- Write 'sharps' on the package with a permanent marker before it goes in the black cart.
- Take items too big for the cart to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply.
Good to know
Drinking glasses, crystal and Pyrex are made from a different glass than food jars, and the City cannot recycle them. Only glass food jars and bottles belong in the blue cart, and those are accepted even when broken. The same black-cart rule covers mugs, vases, fish tanks and other glass, ceramic or porcelain housewares.
