Glass bottles and jars: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Empty, rinsed glass food jars and bottles go loose in the blue cart. Drink bottles that carry a deposit can also go back to a bottle depot for a refund.
How to prepare it
- Pour out liquids and scrape leftover food into your kitchen compost pail, then rinse and shake out the water.
- Take the lid off and put it in the blue cart separately; metal jar lids and bottle caps are recyclable.
- Labels and stickers can stay on the glass.
- A jar that breaks can still go loose in the blue cart.
- When returning bottles to a bottle depot, you can leave the caps on.
Good to know
The blue cart takes glass packaging: food and mason jars, cooking oil and vinegar bottles, beverage bottles and cosmetic jars. Drinking glasses, Pyrex, mirrors and window glass are a different kind of glass and go in the black cart, wrapped as sharps. In an apartment or townhouse complex, glass bottles should be accepted in your building's recycling; if they are not, report it to 311.
