Aluminum foil and trays: blue cart

Blue cart — Recycling

Put clean, dry aluminum foil, pie plates, baking trays, foil takeout containers and stove liners in your blue cart. Crumple loose foil into a ball.

How to prepare it

  1. Scrape food into your compost and wipe or rinse the foil; foil caked in grease or meat juices that won't come clean goes in the black cart.
  2. Take paper or plastic lids off foil takeout containers and recycle them separately.
  3. Recycle foil wrappers from burgers, hot dogs and burritos too, after wiping off food residue.
  4. Place foil items in the cart loose, not inside a bag.

Good to know

Since October 1, 2026, foil-lined chip bags, granola bar wrappers and other plastic-and-foil snack packaging also go in the blue cart when empty. Foil isn't compostable, so keep it out of the green cart even when it held food; scrape the food into the green cart instead.
