Rechargeable and lithium batteries: special drop-off
Special handling
Take loose rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries to a participating retailer or fire-station HHW depot; damaged or built-in ones go to an Eco Centre.
How to prepare it
- Tape over both terminals with clear, electrical or duct tape, leaving the label visible, or seal each battery in its own clear bag.
- If a battery cannot be removed from a phone, laptop, vape or toy, bring the whole device to an Eco Centre.
- Hand swollen, leaking, corroded or scorched batteries directly to Eco Centre staff and tell them about the damage.
- Look up retail drop-offs, such as London Drugs, Staples, The Home Depot and Calgary Co-op, at recycleyourbatteries.ca.
Good to know
The City program takes household batteries up to 5 kg, including lithium-ion, nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium and small sealed lead acid. E-bike and e-scooter batteries are not accepted: return them to the seller or a free e-mobility drop-off listed at recycleyourbatteries.ca. For an electric vehicle battery, contact the dealership or Call2Recycle.
