Propane tanks

⚠️
In Calgary, put this in the
Special handling

Propane cylinders are not allowed in carts. Drop them off at a City landfill or a refill/exchange location.

Also searched as: propane, bbq tank, propane cylinder.

Why it can’t go in a cart

Even “empty” cylinders hold residual pressurized gas — crushed in a truck or shredded at a facility, they can explode. Depots depressurize and recycle the steel safely.

Get it right

  • BBQ-size tanks and the small green camping cylinders both need drop-off — neither ever goes in a cart.
  • Tank-exchange programs at gas stations and hardware stores take old BBQ tanks in trade.
  • All three City landfills accept propane cylinders at the hazardous-waste area.
  • Transport tanks upright with the valve closed.
