Propane tanks: special drop-off
Special handling
Take propane tanks under 30 lb, including camping and butane canisters, to a fire-station HHW depot or City Eco Centre for free. Never put them in a cart.
How to prepare it
- Do not puncture or crush any tank or canister, however small.
- Secure tanks upright in the trunk or cargo area so they cannot tip or roll.
- Fire-station depots are open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and need no appointment.
- Vehicle propane tanks are not accepted at Eco Centres or landfills; contact a metal recycler, which may charge a fee.
Good to know
A pressurized tank in a garbage or recycling truck is a major safety hazard for drivers and facility staff, so keep every size out of the carts. The City's program covers tanks under 30 lb, such as standard barbecue tanks, and also takes helium tanks in the 8.9 and 14.9 cubic foot sizes. Drop-off is free as long as you bring no other garbage.
