In Calgary, put this in the
Green cart — Compost
Meat, fish and bones all go in the green cart.
Also searched as: meat, bones, fish, poultry.
Why the green cart?
Backyard composters can’t handle meat, but Calgary’s industrial facility runs hot enough to break down meat, fish, bones and shells safely — heat-treating the material to kill pathogens along the way. It all becomes compost.
Get it right
- Bones, shellfish shells, fat trimmings and skin are all accepted.
- Wrap raw meat scraps in newspaper or a paper bag to control odour.
- In hot weather, stash meat scraps in the freezer and add them to the cart the night before pickup.
