Meat and bones: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put raw, cooked and spoiled meat, poultry, fish, bones, carcasses and shellfish shells in your green cart.
How to prepare it
- Wrap scraps in newspaper or a paper bag, or use a certified compostable liner; plastic bags are not allowed in the green cart.
- Let pan grease cool and solidify, then scrape it into the pail with the scraps.
- Rinse plastic and foam meat trays for the blue cart; foam trays have been accepted since October 1, 2026.
- Recycle clean butcher paper and wax paper in the blue cart once food bits are wiped off.
Good to know
Whole chicken and turkey carcasses, ground meat, deli meat and seafood shells are all accepted. Bagging is optional, but a certified compostable liner helps keep your pail and cart clean and cuts down on odours and pests. Absorbent pads from meat trays are the exception: they go in the black cart.
