Eggshells: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put eggshells, and whole eggs that have gone bad, in your green cart. Recycle the empty carton (paper, plastic or foam) in the blue cart.
How to prepare it
- Line the kitchen pail with a certified compostable bag, a paper bag or folded newspaper if you like; plastic bags are not accepted.
- Pull any paper inserts or coverings off the carton and recycle them separately.
- Foam egg cartons have been accepted in the blue cart since October 1, 2026.
- Recycle liquid egg-white cartons in the blue cart too, removing plugs and pull tabs to recycle separately.
Good to know
Shake any broken shell or spilled egg out of the carton so it's empty and clean, and put cartons in the blue cart loose rather than bagged. Bags labelled biodegradable or oxo-degradable are made from plastic, so they don't belong in the green cart either.
