Cooking oil (small amounts): green cart
Green cart — Compost
Let fats and grease cool and harden, or soak oil into paper towel, then put it in your green cart. Never pour cooking oil down a sink, drain or toilet.
How to prepare it
- Mix liquid oil with an absorbent such as paper towel, sawdust or kitty litter, and tie the mixture in a certified compostable bag.
- Add only what your kitchen pail contents can soak up; a fuller pail absorbs more than an emptier one.
- Spread larger amounts, like fryer oil, over several days; the City sets a two-litre maximum for grease soaked up this way.
- Recycle the empty container in the blue cart: glass oil bottles, metal oil cans and empty cooking spray cans with the lid on.
Good to know
Hot water and dish soap don't help: sewer pipes are cold, so grease hardens further down the line and builds into blockages, and a garbage disposal doesn't change that. Household hazardous waste drop-offs don't accept cooking oil, so the green cart is the City's route for household amounts.
