Cooking oil (small amounts)

Black cart — Garbage

Solidify or soak up small amounts of cooking grease and put it in the black cart. Large amounts go to a recycling depot — never down the drain.

Also searched as: cooking oil, grease, bacon grease.

Why the black cart?

Grease down the drain congeals in your pipes and the city’s sewers — it’s the raw material of the infamous “fatberg”. Small solidified amounts are safe in the garbage, and Eco Centres accept larger volumes of used cooking oil for recycling into biofuel.

Get it right

  • Let pan grease cool and solidify, then scrape it into the black cart — or soak small amounts up with paper towel (which can then go green).
  • Pour larger amounts into a sealable container and drop it at an Eco Centre free of charge.
  • Never pour oil down any drain, even with hot water and soap — it re-solidifies further down the pipe.
