Dairy products: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put cheese, yogurt, sour cream, butter and leftover milk in your green cart. Soak up liquids with paper first, and keep dairy out of the drain.
How to prepare it
- Pour spoiled milk or cream over newspaper, flyers or used paper towel in your kitchen pail, adding only what the contents can absorb.
- For more than two litres, add a little each day until it's all gone.
- Let melted butter, lard or ghee firm up before scraping it into the pail.
- Rinse milk jugs, cartons and yogurt tubs for the blue cart, peeling off foil or plastic seals to recycle separately.
Good to know
Fats in milk and cream build up inside sewer pipes over time, which is why the City asks you to compost dairy rather than pour it down the sink. Wax coatings from cheeses like Babybel go in the black cart, while butter and cream cheese wrappers can be wiped clean and recycled in the blue cart.
