Spoiled dairy and cheese go in the green cart (empty liquid milk down the drain first).

Why the green cart?
Solid and semi-solid dairy composts fine at the City facility. Liquids are the problem — they make the cart heavy, leaky and smelly, and the facility de-waters incoming material anyway, so pourable liquids go down the drain first.
Get it right
- Cheese, yogurt, sour cream and butter: green cart, scraped out of their containers.
- Pour milk and cream down the drain; the empty carton or jug then goes in the blue cart rinsed.
- Soak up small amounts of liquid with paper towel or newspaper before it goes in the cart.
