In Calgary, put this in the
Green cart — Compost
All food goes in the green cart — fruit, vegetables, leftovers, plate scrapings.
Also searched as: leftovers, food waste, fruit, vegetables, vegetable scraps.
Why the green cart?
Green cart contents go to Calgary’s composting facility — one of the largest in Canada — where food waste becomes finished compost in a matter of weeks. In the landfill, that same food would rot without oxygen and generate methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO₂.
Get it right
- Everything edible qualifies: peels, cores, plate scrapings, spoiled leftovers, mouldy bread.
- Line your kitchen pail with a paper bag, newspaper or a certified-compostable bag — never a regular plastic bag.
- Wrap wet scraps in newspaper or freeze smelly ones until collection day to keep the cart fresh.
