Green cart — Compost
Coffee grounds, paper filters and most tea bags go in the green cart. Remove any plastic/staple from tea bags.
Also searched as: coffee grounds, coffee filter, tea bags, tea.
Why the green cart?
Grounds are nitrogen-rich compost feedstock and paper filters break down right along with them. Some premium “silky” tea bags are actually plastic mesh, which doesn’t compost — that’s why the pyramid-style bags are worth checking.
Get it right
- Dump the whole filter, grounds and all, straight into the green cart or kitchen pail.
- Paper tea bags go in whole; snip off staples and tags if you can.
- Shiny, silky pyramid bags are usually plastic — empty the leaves into the green cart and put the bag in the black.
- Coffee pods need disassembly: grounds to green, pod shell to black (unless the brand runs its own take-back).
