Coffee grounds and filters: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put coffee grounds, paper filters, tea bags and loose tea in your green cart. Plastic and aluminum coffee pods are emptied and recycled in the blue cart.
How to prepare it
- Compost tea bags with their strings and paper tags, but pull out any staples first.
- Nylon, mesh and other fabric tea bags are garbage, so they belong in the black cart.
- Empty the grounds from K-Cups, Nespresso capsules and similar pods into the compost, peel off the seal, and recycle both pieces in the blue cart.
- Shake the last grounds out of empty coffee bags and pouches, then recycle them in the blue cart.
Good to know
Pods labelled compostable or biodegradable are the common mix-up. They don't break down fast enough for the City's composting process, so empty the grounds into the green cart and put the pod in the black cart. Coffee bags marked compostable belong in the blue cart, not the green cart.
