Bread and baked goods: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put bread, buns, pastries, pasta, rice, cereal and other grains in your green cart, whether fresh, stale, cooked or mouldy.
How to prepare it
- Take food out of its packaging first; empty plastic bread bags go in the blue cart after you shake out the crumbs.
- Recycle clean paper bakery bags and boxes, but compost ones covered in icing or food.
- Tear the plastic window out of bakery boxes and bags, then recycle the paper and plastic separately.
- Bread tags and twist ties go in the black cart once you're done reusing them.
Good to know
If you line your kitchen pail, use a certified compostable bag, a paper bag or folded newspaper; plastic bags, including ones labelled biodegradable, are not accepted in the green cart. Chewing gum is the one snack the City sends to the black cart instead.
