Black cart — Garbage
Donate working toys. Broken toys without batteries or cords, including plastic ones, go in the black cart; electronic toys go to electronics recycling.
How to prepare it
- Call a charity such as Goodwill Alberta, Kidney Clothes or the Calgary Drop-In Centre first to confirm it is accepting toy donations.
- Return Mattel-brand toys like Barbie, Matchbox and Mega through Mattel's free Playback take-back pilot for reuse and recycling.
- Bring broken toys with a battery or power cord to an electronics recycling drop-off or a City Eco Centre, free unless you add other garbage.
- Never put an electronic toy in the blue cart; the City warns electronics can damage recycling equipment.
Good to know
A recycling symbol on a plastic toy only tells you the type of plastic; it does not make the toy recyclable. The blue cart takes packaging, so recycle the box and wrapping but put the broken toy in the black cart. Electronic toys qualify for electronics recycling only if they have a cord or run on a battery or charger.
