Plastic water bottles: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Empty plastic water and pop bottles go in the blue cart with caps on, or you can return them to a bottle depot for any deposit paid.
How to prepare it
- Screw the cap back on the empty bottle; plastic caps can stay on whether you recycle at home or at a depot.
- Pour out any leftover liquid before the bottle goes in the cart.
- Put bottles in the blue cart loose, never in a bag, and make sure everything fits with the lid closed.
- Recycle the stretchy plastic wrap from water bottle cases in the blue cart as well.
Good to know
Caps are the most common mix-up. Older advice said to remove them and put them in the garbage, but the City now accepts plastic caps and lids in the blue cart and lets them stay on the bottle. A depot return gets back the deposit you paid at purchase; the blue cart is the option if you are not collecting the refund.
