Chip bags and candy wrappers: blue cart

Since October 1, 2026, empty chip and snack bags and candy, chocolate and granola bar wrappers go loose in the blue cart.

How to prepare it
- Shake crumbs and broken chips into your kitchen compost pail before recycling the bag.
- Turn bags inside out if crumbs cling to the corners, and make sure the wrapper is clean.
- Put bags and wrappers in the cart loose; you no longer need to bundle them inside another plastic bag.
- Leftover chips, candy and snacks are food, so they belong in the green cart rather than the blue cart.
Good to know
A chip bag labelled biodegradable or compostable still does not belong in the green cart; the City says these bags do not break down at its composting facility. Only the packaging is recyclable, so empty the bag completely. Energy bar, protein bar and fruit snack wrappers are accepted too, and cookie bags can go in once any plastic tray inside is removed and recycled separately.
