Plastic straws: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Empty, clean plastic straws go in the blue cart. Straws labelled compostable are the exception and go in the black cart.
How to prepare it
- Pull the straw out of your drink cup and recycle the two separately.
- Rinse or shake out drink residue so the straw goes in clean.
- Plastic lids can stay on plastic cups when they go in the blue cart.
- Check the label: compostable plastic straws belong in the garbage, not the green cart.
Good to know
This replaces older advice to put straws in the garbage. The City now groups plastic straws with plastic cutlery as blue-cart items. Compostable plastic straws go in the black cart: they do not break down fast enough for City composting, and compostable plastics are not accepted in the blue cart. Put straws and other recyclables in the cart loose, never bagged.
