Black plastic containers: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Empty, clean black plastic containers and trays go in the blue cart. The City treats black plastic packaging like any other plastic container.
How to prepare it
- Scrape leftover food into the green cart, then rinse the container or wipe it with a used napkin.
- Plastic lids can stay on the container; you do not need to remove labels.
- Place containers in the cart loose; the City treats bagged recyclables as garbage and does not open the bags.
- Containers labelled compostable are the exception: they go in the black cart, not the blue or green cart.
Good to know
Colour is not the test; whether the item is packaging is. The City's A to Z list sends black plastic containers and trays to the blue cart. Black plastic products, such as storage bins, toys or patio furniture, are not packaging and should not go in the blue cart. Never use a black garbage bag to hold recyclables.
