Plastic jugs: blue cart

Blue cart — Recycling

Empty, rinsed plastic jugs for milk, juice and laundry detergent go in the blue cart. Leave the plastic caps and pumps on.

How to prepare it

  1. Pour out what is left, rinse the jug and shake out excess water before recycling.
  2. Keep plastic caps, lids and pumps on the empty jug instead of removing them.
  3. If a drink jug carries a deposit, you can return it to a bottle depot for a refund instead.
  4. Jugs with a hazard symbol, such as antifreeze, windshield washer fluid or motor oil containers, go to household hazardous waste drop-off, even when empty.

Good to know

Older advice said to remove caps and put them in the garbage. The City's current guidance lets plastic caps, lids and pumps stay on empty containers, so the jug goes in whole. Recyclables must be loose and fit inside the blue cart with the lid closed; take extra recycling to a community recycling depot.
