Why the black cart?
Cutlery is too small for the sorting screens — anything roughly smaller than a fist falls through and contaminates other streams, so small rigid plastics aren’t accepted even when the plastic itself is technically recyclable.
Get it right
- “Compostable” bioplastic cutlery goes in the black cart too — Calgary’s facility can’t verify or process it.
- Say “no cutlery” on delivery orders if you’re eating at home — it’s the easiest waste you’ll never create.
