Plastic cutlery: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Clean plastic forks, spoons, knives, stir sticks and plates go in the blue cart. Cutlery labelled compostable goes in the black cart instead.
How to prepare it
- Wipe or rinse off food, putting any scraps in the green cart, before the cutlery goes in the blue cart.
- Plastic straws, chopsticks and beverage plugs follow the same blue-cart rule.
- Check for a compostable label: those forks, spoons, knives and straws belong in the garbage, not the green cart.
- Disposable wooden and bamboo cutlery, chopsticks and stir sticks can go in the green cart.
Good to know
This replaces older advice to throw plastic cutlery out. The City's current guidance accepts clean plastic cutlery in the blue cart. Compostable plastic cutlery is the exception: it does not break down fast enough for City composting and contains additives that are not recyclable, so it goes in the black cart. In a multi-family building, ask your compost collection company whether it accepts compostable cutlery.
