Plastic tubs and lids: blue cart
Blue cart — Recycling
Empty, clean plastic tubs, such as yogurt, sour cream and margarine containers, go in the blue cart with their plastic lids on.
How to prepare it
- Scrape leftover food into the green cart, rinse the tub and shake out the water.
- Keep the plastic lid on the tub; loose plastic lids, even small caps, can go in the blue cart too.
- Peel off foil or plastic safety seals, wipe them clean and recycle them separately from the tub.
- Deli tubs, plastic peanut butter jars and protein powder containers are accepted the same way.
Good to know
Earlier advice to put small lids in the garbage is out of date. The City now accepts plastic tub lids, bottle caps, coffee cup lids and dome lids in the blue cart. Metal lids are different: take them off and recycle them separately. Containers labelled compostable cannot go in the blue cart because of their additives; put them in the black cart.
