Why the blue cart?
Rigid polypropylene tubs are sorted and pelletized into new containers and durable goods. Food residue is the main thing that ruins a load, which is why the rinse matters more than the recycling symbol.
Get it right
- Scrape out food scraps (into the green cart) and give the tub a quick rinse.
- Keep lids with their tubs — nested or snapped on is fine.
- One exception: black plastic tubs and trays go in the black cart, because the optical sorters can’t see black plastic.
