Pet waste: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Put dog waste and kitty litter in the green cart, sealed in a paper bag or a certified compostable bag that is tied or rolled closed.
How to prepare it
- Check pet waste bags for a certified compostable logo; bags marked only biodegradable are plastic and are not accepted.
- All types of kitty litter can go in the green cart, as long as the litter is bagged first.
- Bag soiled bedding from cages the same way; pet fur and leftover pet food can also go in the green cart.
- In an apartment, condo or townhouse complex, ask your compost collection company whether it takes pet waste.
Good to know
The City requires pet waste to be bagged to control dust and protect your collector. Plastic and biodegradable bags do not break down; they leave small plastic pieces in the finished compost, which is why only certified compostable or paper bags are accepted. Empty pet food bags are packaging, so put them in the blue cart.
