In Calgary, put this in the
Green cart — Compost
Pet waste goes in the green cart. Use paper bags or BPI-certified compostable bags — not regular plastic.
Also searched as: dog poop, cat poop, animal waste.
Why the green cart?
Calgary is one of the few cities whose composting facility accepts pet waste — its high-temperature process destroys the pathogens that make pet waste unsafe for backyard composting. The bag rule matters because plastic survives composting and contaminates the finished product.
Get it right
- Use paper bags or certified-compostable bags (look for the BPI logo) — a regular plastic bag turns compostable waste into garbage.
- Dog waste scooped from the yard can go straight in loose, or wrapped in newspaper.
- This is a Calgary-specific perk — most municipalities send pet waste to landfill, so don’t assume the rule travels.
