Hair and nail clippings: green cart
Green cart — Compost
Human hair, pet hair and natural nail clippings go in the green cart. Bag hair in a paper or certified compostable bag first.
How to prepare it
- Gather hair in a paper bag or a bag printed with a certified compostable logo, then tie or roll it closed before it goes in the cart.
- Dyed hair is accepted, and so is fur brushed from your dog or cat.
- Fingernail, toenail and pet nail clippings can all go in the green cart.
- Keep hair out of toilets, sinks and drains, where it can damage household pipes.
Good to know
Loose hair must be contained in a paper or certified compostable bag; plastic and biodegradable bags are not accepted in the green cart. The City's list covers real nail clippings only. Nail polish or remover with product left in it goes to a household hazardous waste drop-off, while empty bottles can go in the blue cart with lids on.
