Calgary disposal answer
Dental floss and toothbrushes: black cart
Black cart — Garbage
Put used dental floss, floss picks, floss containers and manual toothbrushes (plastic, bamboo or charcoal) in the black cart as garbage.
How to prepare it
- Throw floss, picks and threaders in the garbage even when the package says biodegradable, plastic-free or compostable.
- Never flush floss or rinse it down the sink, where it can damage the pipes in your home.
- Treat bamboo and charcoal toothbrushes the same as plastic ones: black cart, not the green cart.
- Electric toothbrushes and water flossers are electronics. Donate working ones, or take broken ones to a free electronics drop-off or City Eco Centre.
Good to know
Eco labels cause the most confusion here. The City says floss and dental accessories belong in the garbage whatever the packaging claims, and bamboo brushes go there too. Electric toothbrushes are different: keep them out of the blue cart and use the City's electronics recycling options. Eco Centre drop-off is free, but charges apply if you bring other garbage in the same load.
