Cat litter: green cart
Green cart — Compost
All types of cat litter go in the green cart, but only inside a certified compostable bag or a paper bag that is tied or rolled closed.
How to prepare it
- Buy bags with a certified compostable logo on the box and printed on the bag itself.
- Skip plastic and biodegradable bags, including plastic pet waste bags; they break into plastic bits that contaminate compost.
- Roll or tie the bag firmly closed before it goes in the cart so dust stays in.
- Dog waste and small-animal bedding go in the green cart too, with the same bagging rule.
- In an apartment, condo or townhouse complex, ask your compost collection company whether it takes pet waste.
Good to know
Bagging litter is required, not optional: the City needs it for dust control and to protect collectors. The most common mistake is a bag labelled biodegradable, which is not the same as certified compostable and is not accepted. Clumping or not, any variety of kitty litter is fine, because the City accepts all kinds.
