Why the green cart?
Unusually, Calgary accepts every type of litter — clay, silica and plant-based alike — because the composting facility screens out the mineral fraction while composting the waste itself. It’s one of the city’s most commonly misjudged items.
Get it right
- Scoop into a paper bag or certified-compostable bag before it goes in the cart — never regular plastic.
- Empty the whole litter box into the green cart at change time; the litter type doesn’t matter.
- Line the bottom of the green cart with newspaper in winter so waste doesn’t freeze to the cart.
